I’m loving this show.
I know it has been about for a little while – six series to be precise – but I’m starting from the beginning.
I’ve been a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes ever since I first read the books, saw the movies starring Basil Rathbone, and the tv series with Jeremy Brett. The reinvention of Holmes on the small screen with Benedict Cumberbatch was a superb, but I think Elementary with Jonny Lee Millar and Lucy Liu is right up there with it.
The characterisation of Holmes is spot on with his genius unencumbered by social etiquette or graces and the reinvention of Watson as a female companion in an interesting counter.
What I particularly like is the way the relationship between Holmes and Watson is being developed through each episode. The twin hook of devious crime and detection alongside the way the two lead characters are discovering what each other are, is brilliant.
As well as enjoyable tv watching, it has set me off looking at how tv series develop story and character arcs.
